That Is Art
2017 - Ongoing
That Is Art is an ongoing research collection of found imagery that explores about the debate of What Is Art. From the beginning of the arts, it has always been questioned as to what defines a piece of art. Some people debate it to the element of craft whilst others believe that it is a visualisation of an idea or concept.
"Ideas alone can be works of art….All ideas need not be made physical.…A work of art may be understood as a conductor from the artist’s mind to the viewer’s. But it may never reach the viewer, or it may never leave the artist’s mind." Sol LeWitt, American Artist.
From the showing of Fountain, a porcelain urinal exhibited by Marcel Duchamp in 1917, to the works of Damien Hirst's The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living
1991 and Tracy Emin's 'My Bed' 1998, the argument to the creation and recognition of a piece of art remains in a constant flux.
This debate still continues even to the contemporary and post modern arts, with the uprise and utilisation of the online archive and technology adding into this debate. For example the creation of the internet meme, through the use on emails, forums and the like, whilst seen as being internet jokes has now becomes an art form in itself. The memes having the ability to transfer ideas or concepts through the use of satire.
The ongoing project hopes to explore the avenues and debates on what is art, exploring the variety of answers to this question.
